From student to consultant

22 September 2021

After finishing my master's, it was time to enter the labour market, I started working as a consultant at Strategy Alliance and I would like to tell you what I have experienced so far. In this special period, in which I had to learn to deal with the challenges of a new job as well as the corona restrictions, I have made some great steps, both personally and professionally. I would like to take you with me on this development.

My first month at Strategy Alliance was all about exploration, especially in the area of Data Management. Because I completed the master Information Management at Tilburg University, I already had a strong basis to work with this subject. Besides reading various books on the subject (e.g. Data Management A Gentle Introduction by Bas van Gils) and solving various puzzles in the Data Management world. After this month, I was able to start working as a Business Analyst for a government agency.

In my role as Business Analyst, I help the data management team with data modelling and Robotic Process Automation (RPA). In this complex environment where enormous amounts of data flow through different systems every day, it is important to organise everything properly. To do this, there is high-level discussion and modelling, with the aim of guiding the customer to get their basics right. There are always multiple ways to approach a given complexity, so it is up to us to find the most appropriate solution. Through these discussions and trust from my teammates, I see my knowledge and skills in this area improving daily, this growth makes me stronger in my own right and better able to support the team both theoretically and practically.

The RPA project is also a very interesting initiative by this authority. Although it is still in its infancy, there are many opportunities to make various processes in the authority more efficient and effective.

In addition to my role as Business Analyst, I also assist in several Strategy Alliance projects. I was recently involved in 2 projects (for 2 different companies) on the issue of Data Driven Working. Both companies see that they have a mountain of gold (data), but still make little or no use of it. In order to help these companies with this, we at Strategy Alliance are organising a number of workshops to arrive at a vision and roadmap to enable the companies to use their mountain of gold more effectively in the near future.

What makes these projects so interesting? As a junior you come into close contact with various experts in different fields and different industries. The topic of Data Management is so broad and can be used in so many different ways that it is always of added value to get multiple perspectives. These sessions are often physical, so in addition to all the professional skills I can develop, it is nice to get out of my attic room and actually be in the office for once.

The first few months as a consultant have been particularly good for me, and this is partly due to all the support from my SA colleagues and colleagues at other agencies and companies. In the coming months, I will obtain several certificates and develop myself further through practical experiences.

Are you still a student or did you just graduate and are you looking for a job? Then I can definitely recommend getting started at Strategy Alliance, a very nice environment where you can develop yourself into an expert in the field of Data Management, Digital Transformation, Enterprise Architecture, Security and much more.
